Return to Ortona : A Battlefield Redemption Cover Image E-video E-video

Return to Ortona : A Battlefield Redemption

Summary: Ortona, Italy was the sight of one of the bloodiest battles of the Italian campaign of World War Two. The horrific carnage of that period is brought to viewers through archival film footage and the radio transmissions of the legendary Matthew Halton. Meeting the survivors decades later, the bitterness is still evident. This documentary joins Canadian and German war veterans as they meet face-to-face for the first time in an effort to promote understanding. Putting aside darker emotions, the veterans recognize each other's valiant struggle and eventually redeem the holy day in a symbolic and tearful service within the rebuilt cathedral.
