Harambee educating girls in Kenya

CBC Learning (Added Author).

Summary: Kenya is a place where women and girls face obstacles every day. Canadian Lorrie Williams first saw that 25 years ago when she travelled to Kenya to teach. She was often forced to turn away students whose parents could not pay school fees, and all too often she noticed that families were less likely to spend scarce resources on educating girls. When one of her brightest students, Margaret Maywaka, was facing suspension for non-payment, Lorrie decided to cover the fees herself. Since then, through the Canadian Harambee Education Society she founded, Lorrie has helped a few thousand girls get sponsored for schooling they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford.
