Arab Revolt : Israeli Political Upheaval March 2001

Summary: Soon after the collapse of the most extensive Middle East peace talks in recent years, unprecedented violence broke out between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank. This report looks at the causes and extent of the violence, and the way both sides have appealed to international public opinion for support. We also examine how the peace initiatives suffered another possible setback when, amid the violence, Israelis held a national election for the office of prime minister, ousted Ehud Barak and replaced him with the notable Israeli hawk, Ariel Sharon.
