Crisis in Russia : Civil Unrest November 1999

Summary: In this report, which examines the latest in a series of crises that Russia has faced, especially since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, we look at the country’s attempt to grapple with what Russian leaders refer to as Islamic fundamentalists stirring up trouble in southern republics, and what others refer to as civil war. The violence and bombings in the heart of Moscow and the violence in Chechnya and Dagestan are evidence of the extent of the civil unrest, but also symptomatic of the political and social instability that still faces Russia, a nation that continues to have a significant impact on global security.
