Columbia : Renewed Warfare November 2002

Summary: Over the past several years, the South American nation of Colombia has been hit by two difficult and violent situations. First is the criminal element involved in the international narcotics trade. And then there are the left-wing rebels who already control a sizeable part of the country and want to overthrow the government. Now a new Colombian president has been elected and he vows a crackdown that will rout both the rebels and the criminals. Human rights activists worry about whether the new war will claim a lot of civilian lives in its wake.
