Next Floor Mars? The Space Elevator. April 2004

Summary: The excitement generated by the latest missions to Mars has a lot of scientists and space buffs hoping that humans will soon go where only probes and robots have gone before. But not many people will ever get a chance to travel into space until something can be done to replace the rockets we need to get us there. They are simply too expensive, and too dangerous. Now, some top scientists think they may have the answer. In this story we look at their plans for a giant elevator that would stretch 100,000 kilometres into space.
