Forced Out : Syrian Troops Leave Lebanon April 2005

Summary: On February 14, 2005, Rafik Hariri, the former prime minister of Lebanon, was killed by a huge bomb blast in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Hariri was a popular opposition leader, and many of his supporters blamed Syria for his death. They held giant street rallies demanding the withdrawal of thousands of Syrian troops stationed in Lebanon. Three weeks later the Syrians announced that their soldiers would be out of Lebanon by April. In this News in Review story we’ll look at the events leading to the Syrian withdrawal and examine what that pullout could mean for the future of the region.
