TEDTalks Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel, What We Learned from 5 Million Books

Films for the Humanities & Sciences (Firm) (Added Author). Infobase (Added Author). TED Conferences LLC. (Added Author).

Summary: Google Labs' Ngram Viewer is an addictive tool that lets users search for the occurrence of particular words and phrases in a database of 5 million books from across centuries. In this TEDTalk, Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel show us how the Ngram Viewer works, and discuss its role in culturomics - the application of massive-scale data collection analysis to the study of human culture. The researchers believe that data extrapolated from Google books can shine a light on societal trends, and, as they put it, "digitize the historical record."
