McPartland, Klin, and Volkmar have assembled this practical book on Asperger Syndrome (AS), written by a panel of experts. Its audience will be anyone wanting evidence-based diagnosis and assessment tools, and explanations of a range of treatment options and interventions for AS. It begins with an overview of the history and progress of care for AS sufferers, and then describes the neuropsychological characteristics and communication patterns of those affected by the condition. The book goes on to outline both behavioral and psychopharmacological methods of treatment. It considers the developmental and educational issues facing AS individuals in adolescence and adulthood and the creation of coordinated systems of care. The last chapter surveys what is currently known about genetics as it affects AS. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com) - Doody's Reviews : DOODY
Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 2000, the controversy over the degree of divergence in the neuropsychological and behavioral profiles of individuals with high functioning autism spectrum disorders has culminated in the deletion of Asperger syndrome as a separate entity in the DSM-5. This second edition provides an in-depth review of the work contributing to the current understanding of the impairments characterizing individuals with Asperger syndrome. The purpose is to bring together leading scientific experts in order to provide an "authoritative work on Asperger syndrome" and address the "challenges in the change to new diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder in DSM-5." The audience includes "clinical child/adolescent psychologists, counselors, social workers, psychiatrists, and school psychologists." The editors also suggest that it would be of interest to elementary and secondary educators and parent advocates. The book navigates the complexities of both the nosological overlap and heterogeneity among these individuals in multiple domains throughout their lifespan. It covers an expansive range of topics, including diagnostic and neuropsychological assessments, communication and behavioral strategies, psychiatric comorbidities, pharmacological interventions, vocational and forensic considerations, and includes updated contributions from neuroimaging and genetic research. The editors note that this edition "features expanded coverage of evidence-based assessment and treatment-including two chapters on behavioral interventions -- as well as new chapters on neuropsychological advances, the transition to higher education, and forensic issues." A thorough list of references ends each chapter. Although Asperger syndrome is no longer a discrete diagnostic entity, this book is an essential read for healthcare professionals who work with patients with high functioning autistic spectrum disorders. Each chapter integrates important theoretical and practical insights that can guide clinical practice and future research. This edition has been updated to reflect influential research developments and the changes in the classification system in the DSM-5. 0.94. Melissa Beth Jones, MD(Michael E.
