  • Doody's Reviews : DOODY
This is the 10th edition of a book on nursing theory and its relationship to nursing research and practice. It is organized according to the Model for Knowing and Knowledge Development in Nursing (hereafter, the Model). The previous edition was published in 2015. The purpose is to examine the roots of nursing knowledge and how nursing values define future practice and guide evolution of the discipline. This edition more specifically represents knowing (empirical, ethical, personal, aesthetic, and emancipatory) and knowledge development as an integrated whole. The book fulfills this purpose and the authors present a convincing, organized approach to knowledge development that is needed because evidence-informed approaches have surpassed theory and philosophical thought in importance in the discipline. Although intended for all levels of learners and practitioners, most readers likely will be introduced to this book while in graduate education. The authors fully endorse use by graduate learners, especially those in programs culminating in the practice doctorate. These learners are future refiners and users of knowledge prepared to enhance practice and patient outcomes. The book meets the needs of this audience. This book provides an excellent overview of nursing's five fundamental patterns of knowing in the first chapter, with the five patterns detailed in successive chapters. A particular strength is its attention to a focus on mindfully integrating knowledge associated with all patterns of knowing. Readers are encouraged to engage in exercises and nursing situations throughout the book. It is logically organized according to the Model and includes practical tables and figures. Web and QR code access to an animated, narrated, and understandable, interpretation of the Model is included. One notable shortcoming is the centrality of focus on the individual person as recipient of nursing care without attention to family, group, or population. This is valuable resource for knowledge development in nursing in the context of the growing emphasis on evidence-informed practice. This edition reconceptualizes knowledge development processes to emphasize the importance of nursing practice with persons in the human health experience. This reconceptualization justifies the replacement of the previous edition. Elements of the Model are interwoven in all aspects of the book. It is a critical resource for those in pursuit of excellence in nursing practice and nursing education. 0.94. Sonja J Meiers, PhD, MS, PHN(Winona State University). Copyright 2016 Doody Reviews.
