Summary: The printed word was his weapon, the courtroom his duelling ground. On March 1st, 1834, when Joseph Howe, editor of the Nova Scotian and champion of the reform, stood before a court on a charge of seditious libel, no lawyer dared defend him. So he defended himself and won a victory for freedom of the press.
