The People vs. The Phone Giants

Summary: Last summer's Rogers outage was a wake-up call about Canada's telecoms industry: too few players, too much power and not enough competition. Canada has some of the highest wireless prices in the world, and for that to change, we need more competition. Marketplace reveals why that's easier said than done and turns the table on the Big Three: Rogers, Bell and Telus — dialling for dollars, and setting up a 'call centre' of Canadians who want a better deal from their cell phone providers. Making a switch from our provider to a competitor is how we're told we can create competition and get a better price. But why should it be up to the consumer? Original broadcast: January 13, 2023.
