Treaty 8 and Native Taxation [videorecording] / Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

Summary:

A Federal Court ruling on Treaty 8, which states that Natives are not required to pay taxes, is being appealed. This documentary explores the history of the Treaty and the implications for Natives and non-natives across the country. Today, in High Prairie, Alberta, many businesses are owned by Natives. If Treaty 8 is enforced, some people will pay taxes and some won't, creating a climate of tension, prejudice and possibly retaliation when hospitals and schools are paid for by some and used by everyone. It may also mean that businesses owned by non-natives may decide to move away, taking much needed jobs from the town.
