Sue Rodriguez : Choosing Death. October 1993 [videorecording] / Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

Summary:

Sue Rodriguez never wanted to be famous. She wanted to die peacefully with some dignity and without pain. ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, robbed her of many of life's simple pleasures and would ultimately bring her into conflict with Canadian law. Assisted suicide and euthanasia are against the law in Canada, but the legal route of suicide would soon be beyond Rodriguez because of her condition. In November 1992, Rodriguez asked Parliament to change the law and made a videotaped appeal to the sub-committee reviewing euthanasia and assisted suicide. Parliament rejected the NDP motion to change the law, but that would not stop Rodriguez from taking her case to the B.C. Supreme Court and all the way to the highest court in the land. This News in Review special takes an in-depth look at the legal ramifications of Sue Rodriguez' battle.
